A Look Ahead to the Lady Lions Pink Zone Game

February is a great month to be a part of the State College community and Penn State family. Most people know all about THON, the world’s largest student run philanthropy geared towards fighting pediatric cancer. But just one week after (once everyone gets their legs back), students regroup to celebrate the Penn State Lady Lions’ annual Pink Zone game. This is a game dedicated to growing awareness and funds towards the fight against breast cancer. It is also an opportunity to honor Breast Cancer survivors; every year they come out in droves, dawning Pink garb and accessories. Last year alone, the Lady Lions donated a record $203,000 towards the cause and that number continues to grow every year. This year, they plan on giving the funds that they raise the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, among other hospitals/organizations.

I still have vivid memories of the halftime ceremony that I witnessed for the first during my freshman year and it was unreal. The lights dimmed and all of the survivors came out on the court with pink, glowing necklaces that were also being sported by fans all over the Bryce Jordan Center. The scene it made for was something that cannot be put into words but must be experienced by any and all students looking to fulfill the entire “Penn State experience” during their time here at Dear Old State.

This video does a nice job of summing up the event and getting the players’ and coaches’ perspective on what it means to them Pink Zone Preview . This year, the game will be played on February 24th at 1pm against the #23 Michigan Wolverines, whom the Lady Lions just beat in Ann Arbor by a score 59-49.
