Again, No. 7 Penn State falls to No. 5 Nebraska
The Nittany Lions didn’t end their season exactly the way they would’ve liked to… The team was swept by Nebraska last Saturday evening (18-25, 18-25, 20-25).
The loss marked the second time this season that Nebraska beat Penn State. Once the Huskers took the lead in each set, it was hard for Penn State to play catch up. Nebraska owned the momentum of the match and ran with it to victory.
Despite the loss, many Nittany Lions put up a great effort that shows in their stats. Leading the board on both offense and defense was redshirt senior Aiyana Whitney with 13 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Haleigh Washington shared the second place spot with senior Megan Courtney at nine kills each. Courtney also had nine digs, tying for first on the team with sophomore Ali Frantti.
The Huskers out blocked Penn State 12-6 and had a team hitting percentage of .241 compared to the Penn State’s .126.
The loss finished the Nittany Lions’ season at a record of 26-5 making it the first time since the 2011-12 season that the team has lost five matches.
Looking forward on a more positive note, Penn State is seeded No. 7 in the NCAA tournament and will host the first rounds of the tournament this upcoming weekend in Rec Hall.
On Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., Penn State will take on Howard shortly after Dayton and Villanova play each other at 5 p.m. The winners of the two matches will play each other on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Howard Bison finished their season at 18-13 and are the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Champions.
