Back on Track

With the Ohio State loss put behind them, No. 7 Penn State came back Friday with a 28-6 win over No. 25 Rutgers. As always the win looks great added on to their record– now 8-1, 4-1 in the Big Ten, but this win carried a clutch morale-booster as well.

Penn State won eight out of ten bouts to secure the win. A few minor slip-ups for the Nittany Lions were taken care of by the team effort for bonus points and Jordan Conaway set the stage for his team in the opening 125 lbs. bout.

The Nittany Lions that struggled last week proved themselves with extra point victories over Rutgers. Jordan Conaway, Jimmy Gulibon, Dylan Alton and Garett Hammond all pulled through with key major decisions for bonus points. With Conaway and Hammond both coming off of losses in their bouts last week, their major decisions put them back on track.

Sophomore Zack Beitz suffered an uncharacteristic upset against an unranked Rutgers opponent Ken Theobold. But, the rest of the team’s abundance of extra points and overall decision wins made the loss irrelevant.

No. 8 junior Jordan Conaway started off the match with a major decision over Rutgers’ Sean McCabe to get the team started off on the right foot. In the first period Conaway trailed 2-1 early on. At the thirty-second mark, Conaway forced a scramble and won the takedown for two, then quickly turned McCabe for three back points and end the first at 6-2.

Second period McCabe chose down to start. Conaway quickly took control and held steady to build up 1:48 in riding time. Conaway chose down to start the third and quickly escaped, 7-2. Working towards those bonus points, Conaway carried out a quick under hook for another takedown and held onto his riding point. He rode out McCabe for the final twenty seconds and called it a day with a major 10-2 win.
