Iowa started off strong with a pin at 125 from No. 3 Spencer Lee. Although it forced Penn State to start a rally from behind, even PSU wrestling fans can’t deny it’s fun to watch Lee wrestle. His pin over Carson Kuhn came at the 2:06 mark as Lee worked Kuhn’s shoulder to the mat.
Next came two wins from Corey Keener and No. 8 Nick Lee, then the most anticipated matchup of the dual, No. 1 Zain Retherford versus No. 2 Brandon Sorensen. Once again, Zain came away with the victory to hold on to his undefeated season on his way to another National Championship title. Retherford wrestled slow and steady building upon his early lead in the first period. He notched two takedowns, an escape and a riding time point to finish off Sorenson 6-2.
Unfortunately, one Nittany Lion was taken by surprise and lost in a 9-6 upset. With a score of 5-3 in favor of the Penn Stater in the third period, No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph got caught in a throw and was taken down to his back by No. 7 Alex Marinelli who tallied 6 points off the move (two for the takedown and four back points). Joseph was totally thrown off and was unable to produce for the final 40 seconds.
A slightly disappointed BJC crowd was quickly thrown to its feet with back-to-back pins from Mark Hall and Bo Nickal. Hall forced the fall at the one-minute mark and Nickal followed with a fall in just 50 seconds.
Shakur Rasheed never fails to entertain as he forced a Penn State upset over Iowa’s No. 7 Cash Wilcke. The unranked 197 wrestler ruthlessly wrestled his way to an 11-2 major decision win over Wilcke and silenced Hawkeye bench.
Upset season wasn’t over as heavyweight No. 6 Nick Nevills took to the mat facing No. 3 Sam Stoll. The Lion worked his way for one escape and scrambled his way to a takedown for an exciting 3-2 win and another exciting heavyweight match for the second week in a row.
The Lions end their regular season at home this Sunday, Feb. 18 against Buffalo at 2 p.m. As the last home dual meet of the season, Penn State will honor its’ senior wrestlers and Rec Hall will give them one final farewell.
