Lady Lions Earn Road Win Against Northwestern
Penn State (15-8, 5-6) opened the game going back and forth with Northwestern (17-6,6-4), leading 17-15 in the first quarter and going into halftime with a one point lead. In the second half, the team began to show their offensive power, and Penn State never looked back after a dominating third quarter performance.
In the third quarter, the Lady Lions went on a run to outscore the wildcats 21-10 lead by senior forward Peyton Whitted, who sparked the offense with five points in the quarter. In addition, sophomore guard Teniya Page boosted the offense with seven points in the third quarter to lead the team to a 74-58 victory.
On the Northwestern end, forward Nia Coffey led the wildcats with a game-high 28 points along with 17 rebounds and guard Ashley Deary scored 12 points. Northwestern suffered on offense throughout the game, shooting 20-59 (33.9%) from the field. In comparison, the Lady Lions shot 45% from the field, and had higher percentages in free throws and 3-point field goals.
Page led the Lady Lions on offense with 18 points on the night along with 8 assists, while Kaliyah Mitchell recorded 9 rebounds. In addition, four other Lady Lions players saw double digits in scoring.
Penn State looks to carry this momentum into Wednesday as the team takes on the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. The game will air on BTN2go.com and the Penn State Radio Network.
