Lightweights for the Win
The No. 7 Nittany Lions kicked off their weekend stay in Michigan with a close win over the No. 15 Wolverines on Friday (19-15). The team kind of flip flopped its individual wins this week compared to last week with more points coming from the lighter weight classes.
Right off the bat Penn State won the first four bouts. The scores were close, no blowouts or majors, but it kept Michigan off the board and a steady pile up of points.
After a two-week rut, No. 9 sophomore Jimmy Gulibon snapped back into action with an upset win over Michigan’s No. 8 Rossi Bruno. In the first period Gulibon used shoulder control and a quick slide behind Bruno for a late takedown and a 2-0 lead. Second period Bruno chose down to start (mistake) and Gulibon held control for the entire period clinching 2:49 in riding time and almost turning the Wolverine for near fall points.
Choosing down to start the third, Gulibon squirmed for an escape and took 3-0 lead. Action ensued as the clock hit 1:00, Gulibon scored another takedown then cut Bruno loose at :15 with the score at 5-1. The Nittany Lion then gave up a takedown but quickly escaped and returned the favor to end the match 9-3.
After the first four bouts, Penn State lost some momentum with two losses in the 157 lbs. and 165 lbs. bouts. But Matt Brown brought it right back with a major decision over Michigan’s Jake Salazar, which made for a comfortable 16-6 lead.
An unfortunate and unexpected Michigan pin at 184 lbs. gave the Wolverines hope only down 16-12 with two bouts to go. Morgan McIntosh sealed the deal with a decision win at 194 lbs. and took the pressure off heavyweight Jon Gingrich.
