Nick Nevills makes his debut at Lehigh

No. 1 Penn State won an exciting 28-9 match at Lehigh on Friday night.

The Nittany Lions won seven out of ten bouts including two majors, one tech fall and one pin.

No. 1 Jason Nolf worked a takedown for shoulder control and got the first-period pin at 1:22. In the 14 matches and two tournaments of this 2015-2016 season, this was Nolf’s eleventh pin.

Redshirt freshman Nick Nevills made his collegiate debut in the heavyweight bout against Lehigh’s No. 14 Max Wessell. Nevills won three state titles in high school in California and finished his high school wrestling career with a record of 200-5.

He handled himself well against Wessell for one of the best showings Penn State has had at the heavyweight spot this year. Wessell scored off an illegal hold call on Nevills and two escapes in the first two periods. Nevills worked for the first takedown of the bout and also scored an escape. The two were tied 3-3 shortly into the third.

Wessell scored a takedown off a low single and cut Nevills riding time he gained in the first. Nevills escaped with :18 on the clock and made the score 5-4. The Nittany Lion took a low shot and got a hold of Wessell’s ankle. He almost had the takedown but the clock ran out.

For his first match as a Nittany Lion against a No. 14 ranked opponent, Nevills held his ground and will only improve from here.

On Saturday, Penn State returned home and hosted Michigan State. It was the final home dual meet of the season before the Big Ten and NCAA championships. Stay tuned for a recap in the next blog.
