Nickal upset in Indiana, but Penn State team dominates on

The Nittany Lions continued to shuffle their lineup in Sunday’s 34-8 win over Indiana.

The team won eight out of ten bouts with bonus point wins in six of those victories. Redshirt freshman Dan Van Cura took Brian Brill’s place at 184 with usual starter Matt McCutcheon still taking time off with an injury. Junior No. 13 Jimmy Gulibon returned to his spot at 141 and freshman Jan Johnson appeared for the second time in a row in the heavyweight bout.

The dual started with the 157 weight-class, putting the much-anticipated 174-bout in the prime time spot of the first half. Penn State’s recently No. 1 ranked redshirt freshman Bo Nickal was set to take on Indiana’s No. 11 Nate Jackson.

Nickal scored the first takedown after two minutes of even competition in the first. Jackson scored the reversal and as Nickal attempted the counter turn, Jackson turned the Nittany Lion for four back points and a 6-2 after the first. Nickal chose down to start and quickly scored the escape. He then forced a stall warning on Jackson and ended the second behind 6-3.

Jackson chose neutral to start the third and Nickal quickly wrapped around his waist and took him down to the mat for a takedown. The Nittany Lion then cut him lose to make the score 7-5 and attempt another takedown. Nickal finished on a low single and got the takedown call initially, but then the official waived it off. Penn State challenged the call but no luck. Nickal forced another stall warning for a final point but lost the match 7-6. Indiana lost a team point during the bout due to a call of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Despite the hiccup in Nickal’s flawless season thus far, the team continues to drive home big-deficit wins and will be facing stiff competition in the upcoming weeks.

The team remains undefeated with an overall record of 8-0 and 3-0 in the Big Ten.

This Friday, No. 1 Penn State returns to Rec Hall for a Big Ten matchup against No. 9 Nebraska. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
