Nittany Lions Notch Back-to-Back Wins on the Road

Penn State went on the road this past weekend adding two more victories to the start of their season and improving to 3-0. On Friday, they took on Rider and worked their way to a lopsided 37-3 win, then traveled to Lehigh on Sunday for a competitive 24-12 win.

The Penn State greats - RBY, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks, and Greg Kerkvliet - took care of business, as usual. We also saw a few fresh faces in those weight classes including Donovan Ball (184) and true freshman Karl Shindledecker (133). Newbies at 149 and 165, No. 20 Shayne Van Ness, and No. 17 Alex Facundo continue to impress. Each of them had bonus point wins, Van Ness with a pin at Lehigh and Facundo with a major at Rider.

No. 9 Beau Bartlett also had a pin at Rider and defeated his first ranked opponent of the season, No. 30 Malyke Hines of Lehigh.

The biggest surprises on the weekend were the back-to-back losses for 2022 NCAA champion and No. 1 ranked 197-pounder Max Dean. Dean faced two ranked opponents and both matches were very tight. The matchup with Rider’s No. 12 Ethan Laird came down to a controversial takedown after a lengthy video review that refreshed a gassed Laird. The takedown ended the match in sudden victory, 3-1 Laird. On Sunday, Dean faced former Nittany Lion, No. 9 Michael Beard who transferred to Lehigh during the off-season. He started off strong, but two stall calls kept the door open for Beard and he took advantage. Dean was battling from behind for the remainder of the bout and couldn’t catch up and dropped the match 11-9.

Not to worry, the season is still early, and Dean saw some top opponents last weekend. It’s great to see the newest Nittany Lions finding their stride and we’re seeing how deep our roster goes at 133 and 184.

The Nittany Lions return home this Sunday, December 11th for a highly anticipated matchup with Oregon State. The 2 p.m. dual meet will be broadcasted on ESPNU.
