No. 1 Penn State Claims Big Ten Regular Season Champion Title

Last weekend, Penn State sealed the deal for the regular-season Big Ten title with wins over No. 8 Ohio State and No. 12 Nebraska.

On Friday night in the BJC, the Nittany Lions won eight out of ten bouts, including four bonus-point wins. No. 1 Carter Starocci was out the whole weekend due to a wrist injury from his bout with Iowa’s Michael Kemerer. He’s expected to be back in time for Big Tens.

No. 2 Sammy Sasso narrowly edged out a 4-2 win over No. 18 Beau Bartlett. The match came down to the final seconds, Sasso worked in on a single leg and finished off the shot with just :04 on the clock. Terrell Barraclough and Creighton Edsell had two back-to-back sudden victory wins that sent the crowd to their feet. Similar to the Bartlett-Sasso match, Barraclough turned a high single into a scramble and finished the bout-winning takedown with just three seconds left. A huge win for Barraclough at 157. With Brady Berge not wrestling at 165, Edsell won his sudden victory bout a bit sooner, closing in on the winning takedown with 1:25 left on the clock.

On Sunday, Starocci and Berge sat out again as well as 197-pounder No. 2 Max Dean. Penn State won six out of ten bouts. Michael Beard stepped in at 197 and nearly upset No. 3 Colton Schultz. He lost on a technicality - that’s what we’ll call it. The ref called two consecutive stall calls on Beard within seconds of one another as Schultz attempted to flee the mat. Down 5-4, Beard had to cut Schultz loose with time dwindling in hopes of a quick takedown, but to no avail. Schultz raised his hands to his ears as he walked off the mat taunting the Rec Hall crowd. Needless to say, PSU fans will be eagerly awaiting the Dean vs Schultz matchup that’s sure to come at Big Tens.

In other news, No. 1 Nick Lee was also named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week!

The Nittany Lions close out the regular season at home for Senior Day on Sunday, February 20 against Rider University. The match starts at 2 p.m. and will be available to watch live with a Big Ten Network plus subscription.
