No. 1 Women’s Volleyball Trounces Two Big Ten Opponents
The No. 1 Penn State Women’s Volleyball team (27-1, 17-1) yet again proved why they are the best in the nation this past week as they took down both Indiana and Rutgers just days apart.
Earlier last week, the Lions hosted the Hoosiers and took them down in front of a crowd of 2,600 fans in Rec Hall.
In just three sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-16), Penn State dominated Indiana and showed the country that the Blue and White might just go all the way this year.
Seniors Ali Frantti (Spring Grove, Ill.) and Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) anchored the team with nine and 10 kills apiece. Frantti also added five digs while Washington logged two digs and four blocks.
Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) made her presence known as well with six kills and seven digs for the day.
Abby Detering (Mentor, Ohio) and Bryanna Weiskircher (Rockford, Ill.) propelled the team to victory with Detering adding 19 assists and Weiskircher clinching 15.
Defensively, Kendall White (Indianapolis, Ind.) had eight digs for the evening.
Statistically, the two teams were evenly matched, but Penn State made the most of their chances. Penn State bested Indiana with 37 kills to 32, 35 assists to 30 and a whopping 13.0 blocks to Indiana’s 1.0.
The women had just a few days to enjoy their win before heading to New Brunswick, New Jersey to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
The Lions once again were victorious in their match, defeating Rutgers in three sets (25-5, 25-9, 25-9).
Lee came out in full force against the Scarlet Knights, logging 17 kills and four digs in the match and also clinched a .800 hitting percentage.
Weiskircher and Detering seemingly worked overtime, with 15 and 20 assists, respectively. Detering also added four kills and four digs for the evening.
Not only were the Lions’ skills impressive, but their defense was able to hold Rutgers to less than a .100 hitting percentage for the entire game.
The Blue and White dominated every statistic on the board, crushing Rutgers with 40 kills to 15, 39 assists to 15 and 8.0 blocks to 2.0.
