No. 12 Penn State Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Hobart 15-8

As the football season becomes a distant memory, spring sports are beginning to heat up at Penn State. This year, both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams are poised to yet again be among the best in the nation. On Saturday, the men’s team proved their skill when they hosted Hobart at Penn State.

The first period had both teams logging four points for a tense start to the game. Sophomore Mac O’Keefe (Syosset, N.Y.) sank two goals for the lions while Matt Donnelly (Sewell, N.J.) and Ryan Keenan (Smithtown, N.Y.) added the equalizers.

Hobart gave Penn State a tough time in the second period, with the Lions falling behind one point. It was Kevin Hill (Webster, N.Y.) and Nick Spillane (Franklin Square, N.Y.) who kept the team afloat with a goal apiece to send the team into the locker room down by one at halftime.

The Blue and White stepped up their game big-time in the third period, scoring three goals and holding Hobart to zero points.

Gerard Arceri (St. James, N.Y.) mastered the faceoff, giving Penn State possession early on in the third. Donnelly and Spillane each tallied their second goals of the game within minutes of each other in the early stages of the quarter.

Thanks to an assist from O’Keefe, Dylan Foulds (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) found the twine during a man-up scenario. Just before the end of the quarter, Spillane added another move to his repertoire of the day and assisted Robby Black (Lutherville, Md.) in putting the ball past Hobart’s goalie for a three-point lead heading into the final quarter.

The Lions turned up the heat once again in the fourth quarter, logging five goals and goalie Colby Kneese (Dallas, Texas) allowing just one from Hobart.

After another Arceri faceoff win, Spillane assisted yet again and found Hill for the first goal of the quarter after the first 90 seconds. Then, it was Hill’s turn to assist, and the junior found O’Keefe for the New Yorker’s third goal of the game.

During another man-up situation, O’Keefe weaved his way around defenders after receiving a pass from Foulds and O’Keefe found the twine yet again, giving Penn State a 13-7 lead midway through the fourth.

Defenseman Chris Sabia (Harleysville, Pa.) took advantage of a clear goal-scoring opportunity and logged his first goal of the game and season. With less than three minutes to go, O’Keefe drove the win home with this fifth goal of the game, thus solidifying the Lions’ 15-8 trouncing of Hobart.

Kneese logged 12 saves for the Blue and White.

The Lions will host Stony Brook University next Saturday at 2 p.m. Head over to the lacrosse fields to get in on the weekend action!
