No. 14 Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Mt. Olive and Coker at Home

This past weekend showed tremendous improvement by No. 14 M. Volleyball (5-4), who faced off against Mt. Olive and Coker at Rec Hall this past weekend.

On Friday, in front of a crowd of over 750, the Nittany Lions took down the Mt. Olive Trojans in three sets.

“I thought tonight’s match was one where we show our dominance in stretches,” said Head Coach Mark Pavlik.

After opening up the first set with a 6-0 run, the Blue and White continued forward with a powerful show of skill and determination.

The Lions went on multiple unreturned runs in the first set to win it 25-16, and the second set was a successful venture with a 25-18 win, despite Mt. Olive turning up the heat a bit.

The third set was won 25-18 thanks to the usual cast of standouts in Chris Nugent (Fair Lawn, N.J.), Jalen Penrose (Cambridge, Mass.), and Lee Smith (Sewickley, Pa.).

Nugent contributed 14 kills while Penrose added three blocks and Smith added 12 kills in his second game back this season.

Saturday night’s game was a bit more a challenge for the Nittany Lions, who ended up victorious after taking the Cobras to four sets.

Penn State scraped by in the first set winning 25-22 before securing the second set with a 9 point cushion, 25-16.

After the intermission, Coker was able to sneak away with the third set by three points leaving it up to a fourth set.

The Blue and White came away with the fourth set win (25-14) to notch a sweep of both opponents this past weekend.

Smith once again played an integral role in the win as he contributed six kills, the game high for the day.

Penn State returns to the court this coming Friday at Rec Hall to open their EVA conference play against St. Francis at 7 p.m.
