No. 2 Women’s Volleyball Climbs the Rankings by Sweeping at Home Tournament
The No. 2 women’s volleyball team (10-0) reminded the nation why Penn State volleyball is so revered this past weekend by sweeping all opponents in the team’s Happy Valley home opener.
The women faced off against Yale, Wake Forest and Ohio, and dominated in each game.
To begin the weekend, the ladies welcomed Yale to Rec Hall and promptly defeated the Bulldogs in three sets (25-9, 25-21, 25-11).
The clear leader of this game was Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who notched eight kills, a match-high seven blogs and six digs.
Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) continued to impress with her 10 blocks. Kendall White (Indianapolis, Ind.) had a match-high four aces while teammate Bryanna Weiskircher (Rockford, Ill.) added 15 assists and four digs.
The fun continued Saturday as the Lions ushered Wake Forest onto the court, only to defeat the Deacons in three sets as well (25-16, 25-11, 25-11).
Lee yet again added 10 kills while Washington clinched seven blocks for the Lions. Washington also recorded a stellar .889 hitting percentage.
Weiskircher once again stood out defensively as she contributed a match-high 24 assists, three blocks, three digs and two kills.
Penn State bested Wake Forest statistically, too, with the Lions recording a .500 hitting percentage to the Deac’s .076. The Lions also clinched 8 aces to the Deac’s 1, 21 blocks to Wake Forest’s 10 and 11.0 total team blocks to 3.0 by the visitors.
In a final showdown of the weekend, Penn State hosted Ohio University, who the Lions also swept in three sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-19).
Lee led the charge with 12 kills and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Washington added four blocks while Weiskircher kept up her stellar performance by clinching 38 assists.
The Lions also singed Ohio with 41 digs to their 24.
Penn State opens up its Big Ten conference play by hosting No. 14 Nebraska this Friday at 8 p.m. in Rec Hall. We hope to see you there!
