The top highlights included No. Shakur Rasheed’s pin over Minnesota’s Brandon Krone in 55 seconds, No. 7 Nick Lee’s major decision over Minnesota’s Tommy Thorn, No. 2 Mark Hall’s tech fall over Rutgers’ Joe Grello and Penn State’s come from behind team win over Rutgers.
The Lions’ were down 9-15 heading into the 165 match and won out with a tech fall and two majors to finish the match 25-15 over Rutgers.
The unfortunate key moment of the weekend was No. 1 Jason Nolf’s injury default loss against No. 17 John Van Brill of Rutgers. In the second period, Nolf had a 5-4 lead and went in for a low shot that led to a scramble. A controversial late stalemate call left Nolf sitting on the mat waving the coaches over. His straight face didn’t show that he was in any pain, but the way he hobbled off the mat didn’t look promising for the rest of the season.
Cael Sanderson made a statement late Monday afternoon saying Nolf’s injury does not require surgery but will take him out for the rest of the regular season.
Sanderson said the injury is not as bad as they thought, but “not quite a minor injury.” The goal is to get Nolf back on the mat for the postseason. With two of the season’s most anticipated matches up ahead, redshirt freshman Bo Pipher will most likely get the go-ahead against Ohio State and Iowa.
Pipher is a natural 149-pounder, but wrestled at 165 earlier this season at 165 in the Lehigh match when Joseph was injured. He was a three-time Colorado state champion in high school and has a record of 5-4 wrestling unattached in collegiate tournaments. His five victories include two pins and two tech falls.
It’s Penn State’s turn to host Ohio State this year. The dual kicks off at 8 p.m. in Rec Hall and live coverage will be available on The Big Ten Network.
You’re going to want to tune in for these next two duals. They are going to be close.
