Penn State had three pins, two major decisions, one tech fall, one win by forfeit and one win by injury default to total 19 bonus-points.
Jordan Conaway, Jason Nolf and Bo Nickal had the three pins, Nico Megaludis had the tech fall and Zain Retherford and Morgan McIntosh had the major decisions. McIntosh’s win marked his 100th career win.
Jimmy Gulibon returned to the lineup in an anticlimactic fashion and received a win by forfeit, but at least it improved his record.
The heavyweight bout was the only loss as it has been all season. Junior Wes Phipps assumed the role of heavyweight wrestler but falls on the smaller end of “heavyweight.” His Penn State profile has him labeled as 184 pounds while his opponent, Northwestern’s Conan Jennings is labeled as 284. Just by looking at the two the weight difference is obvious. To no surprise, Phipps struggled to lock in on his shots and Jennings used his weight advantage to fight off Phipps’ attempts. The 10-0 major decision loss did no harm to the team score, but in the future this bout could be crucial for the team.
But for now, Penn State remains undefeated with a 10-0 record and a 5-0 record in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions face No. 8 Illinois on Saturday in Champaign, Illinois at 4 p.m. and the Big Ten Network will provide coverage.
