The Real Losers
I can barely keep up with the Penn State news this week! Every time I begin writing about one thing, another pops up.
Recently, I’ve written a lot about losing, and about how we are winning where it matters. You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. This week is proof of that. In the big picture, we are not the ones losing.
Corbett is losing. We’re finally saying goodbye to our PA governor, another leader who failed to lead us, someone who truly did have the power to stop a monster years ago. The rage I have towards the actions of this person seems to know no depth.
Decked out in Penn State apparel and with a PSU-clad toddler in tow, I nearly danced to the polls on Tuesday to cast my vote. The wise guy who checked us in told my son he wasn’t allowed to vote “with all that Penn State stuff on.” My son pointed to my shirt and said (as he had been doing all day), “Penn State!” And then, God Bless him, he added, “Vote!” That’s right buddy, even my baby knows Penn State chooses the governor today.
Students, are you watching? Future students, are you watching? This is a powerful group of alumni you are joining. The whole country voted Republican and we ousted the Republican incumbent. We are winning.
Emmert is losing. With the recent release of internal emails, we are closer and closer to the truth. The NCAA didn’t have the authority to sanction us and they knew it. They BLUFFED? Are you kidding me? With many sections of these revealing emails redacted, can you even imagine what else is in there? I could not be happier to see every media outlet that is picking up this story. Writers all across the country blasting the NCAA. We are winning.
The remaining members of the November 2011 Board of Trustees and their cohorts are losing. You thought you could convince us to move on. You thought you could get us to look the other way. We will not back down until the truth is set free. Until every last failing excuse for leadership is out of power. Those who continue to hide information are losing. We are winning.
All of these “revelations” leave me feeling a mixture of outrage and delight. Finally, finally others are seeing the truth we knew all along. It’s a beautiful thing. And it’s absolutely maddening.
I believe what we are watching now is the collapse of a conspiracy. I don’t know if we will ever get the whole truth, but I think we’re going to get a large portion of it. Corbett is already trying to turn on the BOT with his charade announcement, “They probably shouldn’t have fired Paterno.” As if HE is not part of the THEY. “Penn State” is trying to pretend they are deeply disturbed by the NCAAs actions. As if they didn’t fold like a house of cards and accept the sanctions without so much as a question. No matter how connected they appear, these people are not Penn State.
We Are Penn State-- students, alumni, friends, and family rising up to take back this great university.
Margaret Mead said, “Never depend upon institutions or government to solve any problem. All social movements are founded by, guided by, motivated and seen through by the passion of individuals.” We are winning.
