Three Sweep

The women’s volleyball team cruised through the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament this past weekend. Tacking on three more victories to their record (6-1), the team quickly swept the first three sets against all three opponents.

The Nittany Lions kicked off the weekend facing Marquette with final set scores of 25-17, 25-12, and 25-17. Outside hitters, Megan Courtney and Deja McClendon, led the team in kills with nine each. Next they plowed over Florida Gulf Coast with similar dominating set scores: 25-8, 25-15, and 25-17. Courtney continued her control at the net with nine more kills. Along side Courtney, middle hitter Katie Slay matched those nine kills against FGSU. Finally ending the tournament with Central Arkansas, the Lady Bears put up more of a fight, but Penn State once again came through with three straight wins: 25-20, 25-22, and 25-10. Courtney finished off the tournament with a staggering ten kills.

She was fourth on the team in digs and kills last year, averaging two of each per set. Her success seems to be continuing into this season and she proves to be an important asset to the Penn State team.

This weekend Happy Valley will host the Penn State Classic in Rec Hall. Opponents include Albany, Eastern Kentucky, and Yale. The first match begins Friday, September 20th at 7:00 P.M. against Albany.
