Two Victories and A Spotlight on #SCTop10
As the story goes, once again No. 1 Penn State continued its win 46-dual meet streak with wins over Bucknell and Lehigh this past weekend, bringing the grand total to 48.
Starting with Bucknell on Friday night, the dual set a new wrestling attendance record for Sojka Pavilion with 4,279 people in the stands. Penn State sophomore Devin Schnupp then kicked off the busy wrestling weekend with his first ever dual win as a Nittany Lion over Bucknell’s Geo Barzona, 5-2.
Other highlights of the Bucknell match were No. 4 Shakur Rasheed’s 31 second pin in the 184 match and No. 5 Anthony Cassar’s 32 second pin at heavyweight. No. 1 Jason Nolf also picked up a pin earlier in the match at the 3:49 mark at 157. Sophomore Bo Pipher stepped in at 165 for No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph who wasn’t feeling well that evening. Pipher’s matchup with BU’s D.J. Hollingshead was tied at 5-5 late in third period and Hollingshead had the riding time locked up. Pipher took his chances and went for the win with one last shot, but Hollingshead shook it off and scored a 4-point move instead to end the match 10-5.
Although it wasn’t the outcome Pipher hoped for, his performance is a great example of the depth of this Penn State team, especially with the younger wrestlers.

The show continued into Sunday when No. 1 Penn State manhandled No. 10 Lehigh in a 42-0 shutout. Lehigh did not have the lineup it had hoped with several wrestlers out indefinitely with injuries.
The dual started with a ranked matchup at 197. No. 1 Bo Nickal took on No. 15 Jake Jakobsen, but Jakobsen was no match. Nicak posted a 19-4 tech fall at the 5:31 to start the dual. Next came the matchup of the day, PSU’s No. 5 Anthony Cassar versus Lehigh’s No. 6 Jordan Wood. The match started off slow until Cassar ramped up the energy to take a 4-1 in the final seconds of the first. He continued hammering Wood with a fast pace the Mountain Hawk just couldn’t keep up with and the match ended in a 12-3 major decision for Cassar.
Devin Schnupp tallied his second dual meet win at 125 followed by a crowd-pleasing major decision win for Roman Bravo-Young over Lehigh’s Brandon Paetzell at 133. Bravo-Young was caught in a low single until he did a backflip, scrambled for two and sent the Rec Hall crowd to its feet. The video clip of the move made its way on to Sports Center’s Top 10 plays of the day on Monday, December 3.
No. 1 Jason Nolf and No.1 Vincenzo Joseph posted the two pins of the day. That makes six pins out of seven bouts this year for both wrestlers. Other highlights of the day included No. 2 Mark Hall’s 6-2 win over No. 7 Jordan Kutler at 174 and Jarod Verkleeren’s hard-fought 5-3 victory over Jimmy Hoffman.
