Villanova Classic Day Two

The women’s volleyball team tacked on two more wins to their record Saturday with 3-0 wins against Yale and Kansas. They finished the Villanova Classic tournament undefeated and boosted their overall record to 8-1.

The team started the day at 12 p.m. against Yale. Penn State kept a scoring rhythm going throughout all three sets and ended each with at least a 10-point difference (25-14, 25-15, 25-15).

Penn State’s top scorers were Ali Frantti with 11 kills and five digs, Nia Grant also with 11 kills, two digs and two blocks, and Megan Courtney with eight kills, one ace, and two digs. The trio set up great momentum to carry the team into their following match.

penn state volleyballThe women’s fourth and final match kicked off at 5:30 p.m. against No. 24 Kansas. The Jayhawks kept the scores a bit tighter than Yale. They sent PSU into an extra two point run in the second set and continued fighting up to the final few points of the third set (25-10, 27-25, 25-23).

Grant and Frantti once again topped the scoring charts and teammate Aiyana Whitney joined in the fun. Whitney led the team with 13 kills and six blocks, followed by Grant with 10 kills, two digs and two blocks, and Frantti added seven kills, three digs and one block.

Micha Hancock, Nia Grant and Aiyana Whitney earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. Hancock was also rewarded with Villanova Classic MVP honors.

Penn State women’s volleyball returns to Happy Valley this upcoming weekend on Friday September 19th and Saturday September 20th as they host the Penn State Alumni Classic.

PSU will face Eastern Illinois, DePaul, University of Illinois at Chicago and East Carolina throughout the weekend. The tournament kicks off against Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m. Friday, September 19th in Rec Hall.
