Women’s Soccer Remain Unbeaten Over Homecoming Weekend
Penn State women’s soccer extended its unbeaten streak to ten straight games after a draw against Indiana and a win against Maryland over Homecoming weekend. Although the Nittany Lions were on the road for both games and missed out on the Homecoming festivities, Penn State had a lot to celebrate as the team is now 5-0-2 in Big Ten Play.
The Lions began their road trip on Thursday as they took on the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington, In. Junior Frannie Crouse opened the scoring for the Nittany Lions in the eighth minute after an assist from Megan Schafer. Crouse was able to get a shot off from the left side of the penalty box past Indiana keeper Sarah L’Hommedieu to give Penn State the lead for majority of the first half. With the goal, Crouse is now tied for 14th in all-time goals scored at Penn State with 30.
With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, the Lions tied the match after Penn State gave up an own goal in their penalty box. Although Penn State outshot the Hoosiers 18-9 throughout the game and earned 13 corner kicks compared to Indiana’s four, Penn State was unable to grab another goal in the second half or in extra time.
Penn State was able to get their offense going a few days later though, as they headed to College Park, Md. for a game against the Maryland Terrapins. Redshirt junior Brittany Basinger scored a career high two goals for Penn State while defender Elizabeth Ball added a third for the Nittany Lions.
In the first half, senior Nickolette Driesse assisted both of Basinger’s goals to give the Nittany Lions a comfortable lead going into halftime. Basinger’s first goal came in the 12th minute of the game as Driesse was able to deliver the ball to her in the box and Basinger headed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season. In the 60th minute, the pair connected again and Basinger was able to score close range. Ball’s goal in the 84th minute was her second of the season.
On defense, Penn State goalkeeper Amanda Dennis was able to secure another clean sheet this season after only having to make one save the entire game. The Nittany Lions look to extend their unbeaten streak as the team is back on Jeffrey field October 13th against Rutgers and October 16th against Purdue.
