No. 6 Women’s Volleyball Claims Victory at West Virginia Tournament
No. 6 women’s volleyball (3-0) opened up their season with a bang at West Virginia University this past weekend, sweeping all three competitors and walking away as the victors of the West Virginia Tournament.
The women opened up their weekend of stellar play on Friday night against UT-Martin; the two schools’ first time meeting.
Returning standouts like Abby Detering (Mentor, Ohio), Heidi Thelen (Edgewood, Ky.) and Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) brought their usual power and tactics to the court, powering Penn State to a victory in three dominant sets (25-13, 25-13, 25-8).
Detering contributed four kills while Thelen added nine. Lee added a .714 hitting percentage and five kills.
The following day, the Lions took on both Delaware and West Virginia.
The team began their day with a three-set win against unranked Delaware (25-15, 25-16, 25-10).
Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a .833 hitting percentage along with 12 kills and was a force throughout the entire game.
Sophomore Kendall White (Indianapolis, Ind.) brought her usual impressive skillset to the court, recording seven digs to help the team lock in this significant victory.
The ladies’ second game of the day against West Virginia offered senior Ali Frantti (Spring Grove, Ill.) the chance to be just the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 kills, a goal which Frantti achieved by the end of the third set.
Lee contributed a whopping 12 kills to the game, which was won in three sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-5).
The women came away as the victors of the West Virginia Tournament and their performance sets them up for a successful season. After a tough finish last year, the ladies are hungrier than ever to reclaim their spot as national champions.
