Penn State checks Ohio State off the list with a 32-12 win

The Nittany Lions’ continued their perfect season Friday night as they handled No. 4 Ohio State, 32-12.

Penn State won seven out of ten bouts including one major decision, two tech falls and two pins.

No. 11 Jimmy Gulibon won a hard-fought match against freshman No. 15 Luke Pletcher. Tied at 3-3, Gulibon worked up his riding time advantage in the second, notched an escape in the third and was able to hold on to his riding time to win the match 5-3.

No. 1 Jason Nolf got his tenth pin of the season at the 1:36 mark against unranked Anthony DeCarlo. No. 4 freshman Vincenzo Joseph ended all hope for a Buckeye comeback with a major decision over Cody Burcher at 165.

Freshman No. 7 Mark Hall was supposed to take on Ohio State’s No. 1 Bo Jordan at 174. Instead, Justin Kresevic jogged onto the mat. Jordan had a small ankle injury and didn’t want to risk further injury right before championship season. Hall posted a pin at 5:21.

At 184, No. 2 Bo Nickal faced the guy who striped him of the NCAA title last year, No. 10 Myles Martin. Nickal was not ready to give up his perfect season record and posted an 8-2 win.

Penn State had long secured the match by the heavyweight bout, but that was the bout the record-breaking 15,338-person crowd in Columbus had come to see. OSU’s junior No. 1 Kyle Snyder is an Olympic gold medalist and it surely shows. He went at it in his 19-9 major decision win over No. 3 Nick Nevills.

Penn State remains undefeated at 10-0, 6-0 in the Big Ten. The team has two more regular season matchups and neither should be a problem. Then the Nittany Lions move on to tournament season with the NCWA Championship Dual Series, Big Ten Championships and National Championships.

The Nittany Lions will be in their Happy Valley home this weekend for two duals. Friday night, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. they face Illinois and Sunday afternoon, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Senior Day festivities will be going on as they take on Maryland.
