Livingston takes the spotlight in Penn State’s 45-3 win over Northwestern

The Nittany Lions returned home on Sunday to a sold out Rec Hall and easily beat Northwestern 45-3.

The win included three pins by Suriano, Nolf and Livingston, one major decision by Nickal and one tech fall by Gulibon. Hall and Retherford both won by forfeit. George Carpenter was back in the lineup and almost got the win, but ran out of time. The Nittany Lions took nine out of ten bouts and scored 18 bonus points.

Redshirt freshman No. 4 Vincenzo Joseph got a day off on Sunday; senior Caleb Livingston got to take the mat. Northwestern’s Anthony Petrone shot an early single but Livingston countered the shot and worked it for a takedown of his own, 2-0. Petrone got the reversal to tie it up, 2-2, and Livingston matched that with a reversal of his own, 4-2. The Lion worked for fall points to make it 8-2 and then got ready to take it home. He reworked his position and turned Petrone again. This time Livingston flattened his shoulders to the mat and got the pin at 2:19. It was his first-ever dual meet victory.

After the match, Livingston said the atmosphere was awesome and it had always been a dream of his to wrestle in Rec Hall. Last season, when Penn State was struggling at the heavyweight spot with Nevills’ injury, Livingston gained 40 pounds and wrestled six matches as a heavyweight.

He was presented with the Ridge Riley award– an award for sportsmanship, scholarship, leadership and friendship. James Vollrath’s father, Bill, presented Livingston with the award.

Vollrath passed away a few months ago from a rare cancer. He too won the Ridge Riley award in his last match at Rec Hall, with a pin, against Northwestern.

Next up Penn State visits No. 3 Ohio State for its second big matchup of the season, Iowa being the first. The dual is on Friday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. and will be aired on the Big Ten Network.
