Men’s Soccer Fall to Ohio State in Big Ten Quarterfinals
The Penn State Men’s soccer team suffered a tough overtime loss Sunday against No. 1 Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Big Ten Tournament. The two teams played each other closely until the 93rd minute, when Buckeye midfielder Kyle Culbertson received the ball in the middle of the box and sent his shot flying past goalkeeper Evan Finney.
Before their matchup with the Buckeyes, the Lions defeat Michigan State in another overtime duel in the first round of tournament play. Senior Brian James was the difference for Penn State during this match, scoring the golden goal in overtime and sending the Lions into the quarterfinals.
Unfortunately for Penn State, their season came to an end against Ohio State. While Penn State dominated the first half of the game, recording eight shots compared to Ohio’s six, the second half and overtime period were fully controlled by the Buckeyes. OSU combined for a total of 16 shots in the second and overtime periods, while Penn State recorded only two.
Penn State finishes their 2015 season with a 7-8-3 overall record with a 2-4-2 Big Ten Conference record. Connor Maloney, Austin Maloney, Brian James, and Riley Grant ended the season with Big Ten honors.
