NHL Comes to Hockey Valley
With a program that has had as much success as Penn State Hockey, it is no wonder that the NHL has begun to take notice of the beautiful and legendary Pegula Ice Arena. Although it was built less than five years ago, Pegula recently housed the 2015-16 Penn State men’s hockey team, who went 21-13-4 in the regular season.
Recently the NHL has announced that a preseason game between the Buffalo Sabres and Minnesota Wild will take place at Pegula Ice Arena. The game is set for Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. right here in Hockey Valley. There is no doubt that tickets will go quickly, especially since season ticket holders for Penn State men’s hockey will have an advance opportunity to purchase these tickets, beginning on July 18.
Tickets are expected to range from $25-80 for Penn State men’s hockey ticket holders, students, Nittany Lion club members, and if any tickets remain, for the public, too. Penn State students are guaranteed the $25 price while supplies last.
Regular parking fees will apply to this event.
Athletic Director Sandy Barbour noted that this was a huge step in the right direction for hockey and all athletics at Penn State.
“We are very appreciative of the NHL and the Sabres for their partnership to bring a pre-season game to Penn State and further grow the game in central Pennsylvania. I know there will be significant interest by Penn Staters and hockey fans in Hockey Valley and beyond to be a part of the first NHL pre-season contest in our magnificent facility,” said Barbour.
This is not only a historic game for Penn State’s Pegula Ice Arena and Penn State athletics, but for the two NHL teams as well.
"We look forward to being the first team to bring professional hockey to Penn State at Pegula Ice Arena," said Buffalo Sabres President Russ Brandon. "It will be a privilege for our organization to play in the state-of-the-art facility that Terry and Kim Pegula envisioned."
Although football season has yet to begin, fans can already expect an electrifying hockey season back in Hockey Valley. With competitions against formidable teams like Michigan and an international game against Ontario, students and fans are already practicing their Roar Zone antics for a packed Pegula Ice Arena in 2016.
