No. 1 Penn State Rolls to Another Victory Over No. 7 Nebraska, 25-6
It was an exciting afternoon of wrestling that put the Lions to the test. The only bonus point win of the day came from No. 13 at 133, Roman Bravo-Young with a major decision. No. 6 sophomore Nick Lee and redshirt freshman No. 10 Brady Berge both rebounded from last week’s losses with decision wins at 133 and 141.
Lee opened the match with an early takedown in the first and chose down to start the second. Husker opponent, No. 19 Chad Red Jr., maintained control to clinch riding time. In the process, Red got hit with two stalling calls and gave Lee a 3-0 lead after two. Red chose down to start the second and Lee erased his riding time. Red escaped and countered a Lee shot for a takedown and tied it all up 3-3. He worked up to over a minute in riding time but got hit with another stall, giving Lee the 4-3 lead, but Red still had the riding time. Lee escaped after a reset and held off another Red shot attempt to end the match 5-3.
No. 1 Jason Nolf starred in the second-ranked matchup of the day and key bout of the match against No. 2 Tyler Berger. Nolf’s persistence and stamina were no match for Berger. The Lion notched takedown after takedown and posted the second most dominating win of the day 10-4.
No. 1 junior Vincenzo Joseph was back in the lineup Sunday to face No. 6 Isaiah White. The duo battled evenly for the first two periods and went into the third period scoreless, but Joseph had over a minute in riding time. The Lion chose down to start the third and was able to escape, add in his riding time and that ended the match 2-0.
In yet another top ten matchup, No. 1 junior Mark Hall took on No. 9, Mike Labriola. Hall went after Labriola in the middle of the mat in the first and forced a stalling call against him. He then worked in on a low single for a 2-0 lead. Hall chose down to start the second and escaped. The Lion shot again, but Labriola countered for a takedown, which Hall then escaped from and made the score 4-2. With Labriola down to start the third, Hall held control but got called for locked hands, cutting his lead to 4-3. Hall then rode out the match and ended it 5-3.
Mason Manville made a big hop from 165 to step in for Shakur Rasheed at 184 to face No. 5 Taylor Venz. He held the match to a decision and let the end of the lineup finish the job.
No. 1 senior Bo Nickal and No. 4 senior Anthony Cassar also held on for victory against their ranked opponents to end the day.
This weekend the Nittany Lions head to Indiana for two Big Ten matchups as they face No. 18 Purdue Friday night and Indiana Sunday afternoon. The Boilermakers are coming off a 9-23 loss to No. 6 Michigan and Indiana will follow up an 11-18 loss to Purdue.
