No. 1 Penn State secures win over CSU Bakersfield

In the first of two duals over the weekend in Cali, Penn State went nine for ten in its 39-3 win over CSU Bakersfield.

The Nittany Lions continue to tally extra-point wins with two pins and a tech fall in Friday’s match.

The first pin came from sophomore No. 2 Zain Retherford in 1:17 minutes over CSUB’s Coleman Hammond. Right after the pin, redshirt freshman No. 4 Jason Nolf secured a technical fall 7:00 minutes into his match and put the Nittany Lions up 18-0.

Unranked 165-pounder redshirt freshman Shakur Rasheed upset CSUB’s No. 13 Adam Fierro. After the break, redshirt freshman No. 8 Bo Nickal had pinned CSUB’s No. 16 Bryce Hammond in 1:57 minutes.

Penn State’s only lost dual came in the heavyweight match. Freshman Jan Johnson is still trying to get into a rhythm on the mat. He was up against CSUB’s Matt Williams and struggled with stalling. Johnson gave up two stalling points and allowed Williams to secure a riding-time point by the end of the second period. Williams chose down in the third and was able to escape and hold off the rest of Johnson’s shots in order for a 4-0 victory over the Nittany Lion newcomer.

Penn State remained in California as they took on No. 18 Stanford late Sunday afternoon. Stay tuned for a recap in the next post.
