No. 2 Penn State Finishes Regular Season with 40-3 Victory over American University

It’s fitting that the three Nittany Lion seniors notched pins in their last dual meet in Rec Hall. No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph, No. 2 Mark Hall and No. 18 Shakur Rasheed all had falls in four minutes or less.

No. 2 Roman Bravo Young also pinned his American opponent in 1 minute and ten seconds and No. 17 Seth Nevills had a major to round up Penn State’s bonus point wins of the day.

The marquee match came at 149 with PSU’s No. 17 Jarod Verkleeren on the rise, he met with AU’s No. 8 Kizhan Clarke. After a scoreless first period, Clarke chose down to start the second and quickly escaped to a 1-0 lead. Verkleeren fought off a Clarke shot and countered, but Clarke was able to get away. Moving to the third, Verkleeren chose down and quickly tied things up with an escape, 1-1. As the clock wound down to the thirty-second mark, Verkleeren fought off a shot and got control of Clarke’s upper body. He swung to the outside circle and finished off the takedown with just three seconds left to secure the victory.

No. 1 Nick Lee, No. 6 Aaron Brooks and Luke Gardner also had decision wins. Brandon Meredith continues to struggle at 125, giving up the team’s only three points in a sudden victory loss.
