No. 4 W. Lacrosse Ends Epic Season Against No. 1 Maryland
After narrowly defeating Princeton 12-10 just days prior to the semifinals, Penn State headed to Boston to face a storied rival, the Maryland Terrapins.
The Nittany Lions began the heated competition by scoring first thanks to freshman Maria Auth’s (Street, Md.) free-position goal less than two minutes into play.
The Terps responded with a 4-0 scoring streak to give them a three goal advantage. However, Penn State’s Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) and Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) were able to come up with goals, but not before Maryland scored another.
The Terps got away with a 5-1 run, but anchor Katie O’Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) clinched a Blue and White goal to keep the Lions afloat. Maryland responded with one more goal of their own before the halftime whistle.
The teams went to their respective locker rooms with a Maryland 11-5 lead.
Although Maryland opened up with two more goals, Gallagher came in clutch by scoring two Penn State goals early on. Another Terps goal was answered by a goal from senior Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.).
A 4-0 run by the Terps was nearly impossible to overcome for the Lions as the score stood at 18-8.
O’Donnell was not about to go out without a fight, and scored two more goals to even out the tally to 20-10 before the final whistle.
Goalie Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) recorded eight saves for the Lions and ends the season at 16-4.
“I’m proud of our players to get us here and the season that we had was just awesome,” said head coach Missy Doherty.
Congratulations on an epic season, ladies!
