Penn State Adds Two More Wins to its Spotless Record
The Nittany Lions upheld their undefeated record, 5-0, and (seemingly never-ending) win streak this past weekend with wins over No. 11 Northwestern, 33-8, and No. 19 Wisconsin, 24-13.
The weekend kicked off on Friday in Illinois for Penn State’s first Big Ten dual of the season. Devin Schnupp fell to a tech fall at the beginning of the match to No. 1 Sebastian Rivera, forcing the Lions to chip away at the team score. No. 14 Roman Bravo-Young, No. 4 Nick Lee and No. 9 Brady Berge all answered with wins to create a nice lead for Penn State. Then, No. 1 Jason Nolf faced No. 3 Ryan Deakin of Northwestern in the key matchup of the night.
Nolf set the tone with two takedowns in the first 40 seconds of the match. By the end of the first, Nolf had Deakin out of breath and a healthy 10-4 lead. The next two periods continued with the same - Nolf took his shots, notched his takedowns and cut Deakin loose to start the process over. Nolf finished the match with eight takedowns, all of Deakin’s points coming off escapes, and finished his 100th career win with a dominant 19-7 major decision.
Penn State went eight for ten, dropping the 165 bout with Bo Pipher in the lineup instead of No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph, who did not wrestle for undisclosed reasons. The end of the lineup included a tech fall from No. 3 Shakur Rasheed, a pin from No. 1 Bo Nickal (his tenth of the year), and a major decision from No. 4 Anthony Cassar.
Penn State wrestling fans have become accustomed to the Nittany Lions’ dominating wins – usually winning eight or nine of ten bouts, racking up bonus points and making it all look pretty easy. But, Penn State’s younger first half of the lineup was put to the test against No. 19 Wisconsin on Sunday and suffered a few surprising upsets. Coach Cael Sanderson said his guys did not wrestle great on Sunday - which speaks volumes to the standards set for his team.
For the first time this season, the Lions had to fight their way back from a team point deficit at the half. Devin Schnupp dropped a major decision loss to No. 15 Connor Brown, but the Rec Hall crowd was far from disappointed with the action-packed bout. No. 14 Roman Bravo-Young put the Lions right back in it with a major and tied the team score 4-4.
Sophomore No. 4 Nick Lee faced his first loss of the season in the second round of sudden victory to Wisconsin’s Tristan Moran. True freshman No. 9 Brady Berge suffered the same fate at 149 in a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Badger Cole Martin. Martin used a late takedown to secure the upset and put Wisconsin ahead in the team score 10-4.
Nolf brought the Lions ahead once again with a tech fall at 157, but Penn State fell behind in the team score once again with a loss at 165. This time Mason Manville stepped in with Joseph still not in the lineup.
Then, the experienced second half of the lineup finished the job with a tech fall from Hall, a major from Nickal and decision wins from Rasheed and Cassar. Cassar’s victory came in the key matchup of the day with a dominating 11-5 win over No. 9 Trent Hilliger.
This Sunday, January 20, Penn State hosts No. 7 Nebraska for another Big Ten matchup in Rec Hall. The Huskers are coming off a win over No. 14 Northern Iowa and will face Maryland the Friday before they visit State College.
