Penn State Dominates Indiana 44-3

Penn State returned to Rec Hall last weekend for its first Big Ten showdown with Indiana. The Lions were back to their dominant winning fashion and took nine out of ten bouts. They won the match 44-3 with plenty of bonus point wins to go around.

Redshirt freshman Devin Schnupp still hasn’t found a way to win at 125, but No.18 Corey Keener made up for the loss with a major at 133.

Jered Cortez followed up with a huge win over No. 12 Cole Weaver in the most exciting matchup of the day. Cortez struck first with an early takedown and was able to turn Weaver, but not enough for a near fall and Weaver made his way out of bounds. Weaver eventually escaped and notched a takedown of his own to take the lead 3-2. Cortez slowly made his way out for an escape to end the first in a 3-3 tie. Weaver chose down to start the second and Cortez immediately turned him for what looked like back points, but the official was on the opposite side of the action and made no call. Penn State challenged, but the no calls stood. Weaver eventually escaped after Cortez worked up 1:30 in riding time.

Cortez used shoulder control for another takedown, which Weaver escaped to make it another tie at 5-5 to end the second. Cortez chose down to start the third and got the escape just after his riding time dipped below 1:00. Weaver went at him with shots and Cortez went on the defense. He fought off two solid Weaver shots and was eventually called for a stall warning with six seconds left. Cortez was able to stay on his feet and finish off the match 6-5.

The excitement carried on from there. Zain Retherford and Jason Nolf had back-to-back pins followed by a tech fall by Mark Hall. Then, Bo Nickal stole the show with the third and final pin of the afternoon taking Indiana Norman Conley to his back in just 42 seconds.

Anthony Cassar and Nick Nevills finished off the match with two major decisions.

After a year off, next up the Lions head back to the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. looking for their seventh title. They’ll head to UT-Chattanooga on Jan. 1-2 for a New Year’s showdown.
