Penn State Earns Dual Meet Champion Title
With back-to-back wins over Michigan State and Illinois this past weekend, the Nittany Lions have clinched the title of dual meet champions. This is the sixth time Penn State has held the title and its fourth undefeated Big Ten season.
First, they rolled over Michigan State on Friday with a 37-10 win, then put up big points again on Sunday with a 39-9 win over No. 19 Illinois.
Penn State started from behind in the Michigan State match down 0-7 headed into the 141 bout. No. 2 Nick Lee picked up the pace with a major decision win, which Jarod Verkleeren matched at 149 and gave the Nittany Lions the lead.
No. 1 Jason Nolf, No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph and No. 1 Bo Nickal all pinned their opponents. No .1 Mark Hall won by disqualification after his opponent Drew Hughes got hit with 5 stalling calls. Mason Manville stepped in once again at 184 and dropped his match against No. 15 Cameron Caffey. Then heavyweight No.3 Anthony Cassar finished the night with a tech fall in just over six minutes.
Sunday was a similar story. Scott Stossel stepped up at 133 with a close decision win. Then the bonus point wins began. Nick Lee and Bo Nickal had tech falls. Brady Berge and Vincenzo Joseph notched majors. Anthony Cassar and Mark Hall locked up pins, and Jason Nolf won by injury default.
For the final regular dual meet of the season, Penn State will host University at Buffalo in Rec Hall and celebrate Senior Day on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Rec Hall.
