Penn State Named Big Ten Regular Season Champs

The Nittany Lions closed this season’s Big Ten duals with back-to-back wins over Rutgers, 33-8, and Maryland, 44-3. They went undefeated in Big Ten play and have been crowned Big Ten regular season champs for the ninth time.

As we inch closer to the postseason, RBY and Aaron Brooks took some rest days over the weekend. Each only wrestled in one out of the two matchups while Baylor Shunk (133) and Donovan Ball (184) stepped in their spots. Gary Steen continued to struggle at 125, but came close against Maryland’s No. 15 Braxton Brown, only giving up one escape in the 1-0 loss. Greg Kerkvliet also took the day off on Sunday while Seth Nevills went in at heavyweight and closed the weekend with an exciting pin over Terrapin Jordan Gabriel in one minute and 56 seconds.

The closest in-ranking matchup we saw was No. 13 Shayne Van Ness and Maryland’s No. 18 Ethan Miller, although the lopsided tech fall win for Van Ness would tell you otherwise. Things were pretty close after one, Van Ness up 5-3 and on top to start the second. The Nittany Lion built up his riding time and worked into position to roll Miller for four back points. Van Ness ran away with it from there, with an escape, two takedowns, four more back points, and the locked riding time in the third period for a 19-4 victory.

Penn State won 17 out of 20 bouts over the weekend, 13 of those being bonus-point wins including five majors and two tech falls at Rutgers and one major, two techs, and three pins at Maryland.

The final match of the regular season takes place this Sunday in Rec Hall against Clarion at 1 p.m.
