Penn State Pins Purdue and Maryland

In two matches, Penn State scored a total of 90 points and and only gave up nine points. The team totaled 10 pins over the weekend as they handed out losses to Purdue and Maryland. The two wins added on to the Nittany Lions’ undefeated season record to make them 9-0.

The one spot where the Lions continue to struggle is 125 (thanks, Suriano). They were forced to forfeit the 125 match on Friday against Purdue. Then, Devin Schnupp came close Sunday at Maryland, but dropped the match 4-2. Schnupp has wrestled a few tight matches this season, but can’t seem to figure out a way to come out on top.

The rest of the Penn State line up quite literally barreled through their opponents all weekend. Corey Keener is stepping up and holding his ground at 133, while Nick Lee has begun to contribute to Penn State’s bonus point wins. Lee is now ranked seventh at 141 and he put up two major decisions in his weekend winnings.

Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf and Bo Nickal had a perfect weekend with two pins each. Retherford had the quickest pin of the weekend in just one minute and nineteen seconds (1:19).

Cael Sanderson seems like he wants to keep both No. 10 Shakur Rasheed and Anthony Cassar ready to go at 197. Rasheed wrestled Friday and pinned Purdue’s Max Lyon, then Cassar wrestled Sunday and won a major. The situation at 197 really shows the depth of this Nittany Lion team.

No. 8 Nick Nevills arguably had one of the most impressive wins of the weekend at Maryland when he upset No. 6 Youssif Hemida, 4-1. Nevills scored on a low single in the first period, escaped in the second and secured riding time in the third as he held Hemida to a single escape point to win the match.

The Nittany Lions are home again this week as they host Minnesota in Rec Hall Friday, January 26. As always, it’ll be standing room only, folks. You can also tune in to the Big Ten Network for live coverage.
