A Couple Falls and a Finalist

A Couple Falls and a Finalist

After a sweep of the first round, a few Nittany Lions met their match in the second round of wrestling on Friday.

Senior 174 lbs. Matt Brown remains the only Penn State wrestler to advance into the finals for a chance at a title. Along with Brown, 125 lbs. Jordan Conaway, 133 lbs. Jimmy Gulibon, 197 lbs. Morgan McIntosh and 285 lbs. Jimmy Lawson have all earned All-American honors. Those four will continue the tournament in the consolation brackets.

Friday morning marked the end of the tournament for 149 lbs. Zack Beitz after a loss to Michigan’s No. 6 seed Alec Pantaleo in the first rounds of the consolation bracket. A quick scramble at the end of the bout ended in Pantaleo yanking the flurry out of bounds and taking away Beitz’ chances at finishing a final shot.

After a promising run including a huge sudden victory win over the No. 3 seed on Thursday evening, 184 lbs. Matt McCutcheon also dropped out on Friday. He fell in a heart-wrenching sudden victory match to Ohio State’s Kenny Courts early Friday morning. Then in the consolation rounds later in the evening he ended the tournament with a loss to Nebraska’s No. 16 seed Timothy Dudley.

Saturday morning Conaway will face Oklahoma State’s No. 7 seed Eddie Klimara for seventh place. Gulibon will wrestle in the semifinal match for the third place finals. McIntosh will face Missouri’s No.1 seed in a big semifinal match for the third place finals. Lawson, also in a semifinal match for third, will face Northwestern’s No. 2 seed Michael McMullan.
