Four Weeks for Four Diamonds - THON 2014

It is rare to find something the Penn State community is more proud of than Dance Marathon. Penn State Dance Marathon, affectionately referred to as THON, is a 46-hour no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon held every February on the campus of Penn State University. It is a celebration of an entire year of fundraising for The Four Diamonds Fund, an organization that provides financial support, emotional support and so much more to families who have children conquering cancer. The Four Diamonds Fund also provides research support and assistance at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, raising over 115 million dollars since 1977. The Four Diamonds Fund is THON’s sole beneficiary and since its beginning in 1972, has NEVER turned a family away. As a local business closely connected to the University, one of Lions Pride’s favorite promotions of the year is the Four Weeks for Four Diamonds campaign. The four weeks leading up to THON, Lions Pride donates 20% of the stores total sales directly to THON.

Over the last six years Lions Pride’s Four Weeks for Four Diamonds promotion has been a huge success! When Lionsthon Pride began Four Weeks for Four Diamonds in 2009, the store donated $17,222. This year Lions Pride donated $26,173.00, bringing the grand total raised over the last five years to $146,778.00. “As the father of two young children and a member of the Penn State community, THON has always hit really close to home,” said store owner Steve Moyer. “We are happy to participate in something that not only benefits THON but also helps bring people into the downtown area THON weekend.”

Each year the promotion has grown and changed in a way to better benefit Dance Marathon. Since 2010 Lions Pride has designed and sold a special Four Weeks for Four Diamonds t-shirt where all proceeds from sales are donated to THON. They have also hosted three “like” drives on their Facebook page where for each new “like,” the store donates $0.50 to THON. The “like” drive helps create awareness for Lions Pride’s promotion. This year Lions Pride also coordinated with The Hope Express to sell their cookbook “From the Kitchen of The Hope Express,” with all proceeds from cookbook sales going to The Hope Express and THON.

Penn State would not be what it is without THON and Lions Pride would not be able to run promotions like the Four Weeks for Four Diamonds campaign without the help of the amazing Penn State community. Lions Pride’s loyal customers have ALWAYS stood behind the University and supported the store. As a local business, Lions Pride is incredibly grateful to be able to give back to Penn State by supporting THON.
