In Cael We Trust
After a lot of pre-season shuffling with the line-up, the Penn State wrestling team won a reassuring match over Lehigh on Sunday (24-10). A mix of new and familiar faces took to the mat in the sold-out home opener.
As of now, Nico Megaludis (125) and Zain Retherford (141) are being redshirted this season. Dylan Alton (157) is still recovering from an off-season surgery and there are some big shoes to fill in David Taylor (165) and Ed Ruth’s (184) weight classes.
No. 12 junior Jordan Conaway eagerly stepped in at 125 lbs. while redshirt freshmen Kade Moss and Cody Law made debuts at 141 lbs. and 157 lbs.
Two more redshirt freshmen, Garett Hammond and Matt McCutcheon, work on making a name for themselves in 165 lbs. and 184 lbs.
Penn State won 7/10 bouts on Sunday including one pin by No. 3 Matt Brown and a huge upset by No.8 Jimmy Gulibon.
Probably the most anticipated bout of the day was at 133 lbs., No. 8 Jimmy Gulibon v. No. 2 Mason Beckman. Gulibon dug himself into a hole at :21 already down 2-0 from a Beckman takedown. After 1:22 of riding time Gulibon escaped and muscled his way to a takedown. With the clock ticking down in the first stanza, Gulibon scrambled Beckman to his back to pick up two near fall points and made the score 5-2.
The Nittany Lion chose down to start the second stanza and escaped quickly to carry on his steady scoring streak. Patience, pressure and more patience led to another takedown for Gulibon in the second and ended the stanza 8-2.
Beckman chose down in the third and scored an escape point, but the battle was over. Gulibon held him off for the time remaining and earned a one-way ticket to upset city.
