No. 15 M. Volleyball Sees Highs and Lows in Indiana

No. 15 Penn State men’s volleyball (2-2) was dealt difficult cards this weekend as the team faced Ball State and IPFW in Indiana.

Friday’s matchup against Ball State saw the Lions play with heart, but ultimately not enough to come away with a win against Ball State, who claimed victory with a 3-1 final score.

Despite a series of close sets, and a second set win, Penn State was unable to keep up with the Cardinals.

Chris Nugent (Fair Lawn, N.J.), Calvin Mende (Redlands, Calif.), and Kevin Gear (Rochester, N.Y.) were leaders on and off the court during the game against Ball State, with Nugent contributing a whopping 17 kills, closely followed by Mende’s nine.

Saturday’s game showed marked improvement in the Lions, who were hungry for a victory.

Claiming victory in three sets, Penn State knocked down IPFW 3-0.

Gear and Mende were once again dominant forces on the court, with adding eight kills and two digs while Mende contributed nine kills and five digs.

Another name came to light on Saturday: Jalen Penrose (Cambridge, Mass.). Penrose not only helped secure a second set win, but was instrumental in serving, adding three service aces, the most of anyone on the team.

The third and final set of the day was a tight one, with IPFW climbing back into threatening territory more than once.

It was Mende who helped the Lions notch the final two points of the game, granting Penn State a road win to cap off the weekend.

Penn State returns home this weekend for their first games of the season on campus.
