No. 9 M. Lacrosse Falls to No. 8 Johns Hopkins, No. 5 W. Lacrosse Creates Epic Win against No. 17 Northwestern
It was a tense weekend for both men’s and women’s lacrosse. No. 9 M. Lacrosse (10-2, 1-2) had another tough test against No. 8 Johns Hopkins, and unfortunately fell to the Blue Jays, 13-11.
Hopkins scored first, before the game clock had even reached one minute into play. Penn State immediately sprung into action as Grant Ament (Doylestown, Pa.) used an assist from Nick Aponte (West Islip, N.Y.) to even up the score. After another Blue Jays goal, Matt Florence (Greenwood Village, Colo.) received an assist by Mac O’Keefe (Syosset, N.Y.), but the Jays put themselves in the lead, 4-2, before the quarter was up.
Dan Craig (Shelburne, Ontario), Ryan Keenan (Smithtown, N.Y.), and O’Keefe each recorded goals in the second quarter, but it was not enough compared to the six scored by the Blue Jays. The Lions headed into halftime down 10-5.
The Lions came out ready for battle at the start of the third quarter, and upped its level of defense, allowing just one Hopkins goal for the period. Hopkins, however, did the same, and midfielder Nick Spillane (Franklin Square, N.Y.) logged the lone goal of the quarter for Penn State, leaving the Lions still facing an 11-6 deficit.
Heading into the final quarter, the Blue and White knew it was time to go big or go home, and go big they did. A whopping five goals were recorded by Penn State. Ament, Mike Sutton (Sewell, N.J.) (two goals), Florence, and Craig netting five goals for a major comeback. Sadly, it was not enough as the Blue Jays notched two goals to secure their win, 13-11.
The men’s team looks to make a comeback next weekend against No. 14 Rutgers on Sunday at 7 p.m. here in University Park
The No. 5 W. Lacrosse team (14-1, 4-0) turned a tight game in their favor thanks to intense perseverance against No. 17 Northwestern on the road over the weekend.
Thanks to junior superstar Katie O’Donnell’s (West Chester, Pa.) five goals, the Lions were able to stay ahead of the curve and walk away with a 14-13 win against the Wildcats.
Kelly Daggett (Bainbridge, Pa.) recorded four goals while Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) contributed three to this high-scoring game. Taylor Bleistein (Bayville, N.Y.) added a goal as well.
The two teams were tied 8-8 at the halftime, but thanks to the patience of the Lion's Abby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.), who scored the final goal with 23 seconds left in regulation, the team was able to walk away victorious.
The women will host undefeated and No.1-ranked University of Maryland this Thursday at 7 p.m. Come out to cheer our women to a victory!
